Please Remember The Golden Rule
In this time of divisiveness and occasional loss of hope, when we seem to be reevaluating our values, I urge everyone to try to remember the Golden Rule:
Treat others the way you’d like to be treated.
This morning I mentioned on FB that some now miss the feeling of hope, now that it seems to be gone…how we know we had it because of how we are feeling now… I feel worse when people tell me not to worry because I’m old enough (76) that Social Security & Medicare changes probably won’t affect me. But what about my children & grandchildren? What about my friends and those I care about? What about all those I haven’t met yet – or those less fortunate? Since I’m white & Christian I have less “threat” – but my whole message in all of my children’s books is to be kind & have consideration for others… What is happening to hope?
The mother of one of my kid-fans wrote to me:
“Sherrill, don’t change because of what is happening.. I love your books for just the reasons you mentioned, you are what our children need right now. We can’t change how adults feel, but with your stories, you help us to teach children how to grow up having kindness for others.. Your words are powerful, they give me hope!”
So that gives me hope!!! And that hope includes hoping that everyone will try to “do unto others as you would have them do unto you”…
Please treat others the way you would like to be treated…
Remembering the Newtown Angels
On this day, so many truly innocent lives were lost at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, CT, and our nation lost a lot of its innocence as well…
Manner-Man was in the final stages of preparation for printing when this tragedy occurred. I was able to include the names of the children as Angels in the Acknowledgements – and SBPRA and I sent a copy of the book to each of the children’s families. So if you have a copy of Manner-Man please look at the acknowledgements… and say a prayer that this never happens again…
Fun Lunch with Santa!
Mice and Spiders and Webs…Oh My! is a Mystery!
Mice & Spiders & Webs…Oh My! is not what it seems… Little Rosemary is afraid to go back to school after her teacher has warned the class that they would soon have mice and spiders and webs in the classroom. Imagining all the worst that could happen – like having smelly mice on her desk, and the kids teasing her because of her fear of spiders – not to mention the idea that only the girls would be subjected to this horrible situation – she discovers that her listening skills need improvement! Rosemary finds that her class is getting some computers – involving a mouse to control computer input, a joint class “web” project on the internet, and the class is not just for girls…
Here are the closing lines:
“There’s only one question that’s left to explain:
Why just for girls? Why only female?’
Ms. Eddy just smiled and replied, “I said e-mail!”
Winner of 5 Awards, Mice & Spiders & Webs…Oh My! illustrates the importance of being a good listener. It also is a cute introduction to basic computer terms. It has won a Global eBook Gold Medal, a Bronze Medal in the FAPA Awards, a Readers’ Favorite H.M. Award, a Reader Views Reviewers Choice H.M, and also a Pinnacle Achievement Award.

My Fingerpaint Masterpiece is Truly a Masterpiece!
Another Holiday suggestion is My Fingerpaint Masterpiece, winner of nine awards including the Gold Medal K-3 Readers’ Favorite Award as well as a Readers’ Favorite Illustration Award. My illustrator, Kalpart, is awesome!
My Fingerpaint Masterpiece deals with perspective, perception and self-esteem as a child fingerpaints artwork in class, and later discovers it as part of the town’s Art Contest. Have you ever looked at a multi-million dollar painting in a museum and thought that your kindergartener might have painted it? This is part of the theme of this book, where the illustrations are all from the point of view of the child artist, whose identity is never revealed. When giving book readings at the schools I always ask the children to vote on whether or not the child telling the story is a girl or a boy. Not surprisingly, it’s usually split 50-50, according to the voters’ gender!
There are also hidden objects in the fingerpaint masterpiece itself, which the readers have fun discovering. Here is a sample, although I’m not sure I got all of them. This is the page showing the upside down “masterpiece”, outlining some of the secrets…
My Fingerpaint Masterpiece was also a double Finalist in the Next Generation Indie Awards, as well as winning a National Indie Excellence Finalist Award, a Global eBook Bronze Medal, a Reviewer’s Choice H.M., a Children’s Literary Classics Seal of Approval and a Pinnacle Achievement Award.

Peter and the Whimper-Whineys is a Whine Stopper!
Another reminder for Christmas giving! Peter and the Whimper-Whineys helps parents cope with whining, disguised as a fun story! Peter is a little rabbit who whines all the time, and his mother warns him that if he doesn’t stop he’ll have to go live with the Whimper-Whineys! The story is especially effective when the reader uses a whining voice whenever a character whines. Children learn how annoying the sound of whining can be!
This is a story that my mother told to my brother and me when we were young, and later to her grandchildren and hundreds of second graders during her long teaching career. In an effort to preserve the story, I taped her telling the story and then put it into rhyme (since that’s what I love to do!) Fortunately SBPRA liked it too – and it’s now sold over 1500 copies and climbing. I hope you’ll consider sharing it with your children (if you have any who whine… LOL)
Peter and the Whimper-Whineys is the Winner of 2 Awards: Winner of the 2011 Readers Favorite Bronze Medal and the 2011 USA Best Books Finalist Award, the year I first discovered the fun of entering contests!!

Fun at College of New Jersey Children’s Literature Class
Yesterday I thoroughly enjoyed being a Children’s Literature Guest Speaker at the College of New Jersey, Fellow SBPRA Author, Karen Scheuer, is a Professor there and invited me to speak to her class full of potential teachers and authors. It was refreshing and challenging to speak to older students, and approach writing children’s books from a different perspective.
Favorites were The Golden Rule and My Fingerpaint Masterpiece...
Karen Scheuer is the author of A Bug and a Wish, a popular children’s book. We have done several book signings together…
“I am strong and my flash is bright…” Manner-Man the Superhero!
“I am strong, and my flash is bright, and I will defend you and make things all right!” – The words of superhero, Manner-Man!
Manner-Man is a Superhero who helps children cope with bullies, and teaches them how to look within themselves for their own superhero.
Winner of 10 awards: Winner of the 2014 CLIPP Principals’ Award, the KART Kids Book List, the Reviewers Choice Award, the Los Angeles Book Festival, a Global eBook Silver Medal; as well as a 2013 Readers Favorite Silver Medal, National Indie Excellence Finalist, a Pinnacle Achievement Award, and H.M. in the London Book Fair and Rebecca’s Reads Awards.
Does Your Child Say “Gimme”?
Another reminder for Holiday Gift Giving! Gimme-Jimmy is about how a bully learns to share. What would happen if every time you said, “Gimme”, your hand got bigger? See how Jimmy’s father helps him learn how to change…
This book, winner of 5 awards, is a favorite of boys…and girls too! It’s also fun in that the Dad is the main parenting character…
(Personal note: Not long after reading Gimme-Jimmy with his Mom, my grandson was badgering his Mom about getting a drink while she was trying to put groceries away, and she said, “Gimme a break…” at which point his eyes got big and he exclaimed, “Oh oh…Watch out! Your hand’s going to start growing!!!”)
