Peter and the Whimper-Whineys Coloring Book
One of my favorite fans is Cecilia, who is 7 years old and refers to me as “the girl who writes books for me“… She was delighted to receive a copy of my newest release, Peter and the Whimper-Whineys Coloring Book as well as a copy for her little brother, Thomas. Prolific, and very successful, children’s book author Sherrill S. Cannon is at it again, with another fun and engaging adventure, but with a twist…this one isn’t just a great story, but also a coloring book.
Peter is a cute little rabbit, living in a house near the woods with his mother and sister. While he’s adorable, he does have a problem – he complains about everything. He whines, he gets grumpy, and he cries. Nothing seems to make him happy. At dinner that night, he complains about his sister having more soup, more jelly for her roll, and gosh darn it, it just wasn’t right.
Peter’s mother had already warned him that if he kept up his grumpy attitude, the “Whimper-Whineys” would come looking for him.
“If you can’t stop that whining, I very much fear That the old Whimper-Whineys will look for you here. You’ll go live with them in a land far away, Where you’ll join them in whining and crying all day.”
The little rabbit didn’t listen to his mother and soon he was sent to his room to sulk and think about his poor attitude. Looking out the window, he wished he was in the woods beyond his home. Instantly, he was transported into the woods where he soon met…a Whimper-Whiney. Peter was about to learn just what being a whiner was all about from a group of woodland men who were nothing short of professional whiners. Would Peter learn that complaining about everything was not a good way to live one’s life?
Peter and the Whimper-Whineys is based on a story the author’s mother told her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. With the urging of her own children, Sherrill Cannon worked her magic to bring the story of Peter and the Whimper-Whineys to life in a very imaginative way. The story is lighthearted, and the author has mastered the very difficult technique of telling a story in rhyme without the text feeling forced – not an easy feat! While once again partnering with Kalpart for the illustrative work, the difference with this book is that the pictures aren’t colored, but rather simple line-drawings, leaving the coloring up to the child’s imagination. The added coloring activity will likely spark more creative play around the concept of Whimper-Whineys and the negative impact of complaining all the time.

Sherrill Cannon and P.J. Hartenaus Named Winners of
2014 Principals’ Award for Independently Published Children’s Literature
Branford CT, Oct 1, 2014 – The 2014 Children’s Literature Independently Published Principals’ Awards (CLIPPA) were announced today. Sherrill S. Cannon of New Hope PA was selected as winner of the top award in the Grades K-2 category for her book Manner-Man. P.J. Hartenaus of Glen Ellyn, IL was chosen in the Grades 3-4 Category for her book, My Sometimes Pal.
The CLIPPA honors outstanding children’s books that offer fun, learning and creativity and were self-published by independent authors. Entries were judged by elementary school principals, educators and children’s authors for originality, learning quality and use of language standards.
The award-winning books were selected from 10 finalists – five in each category.
Manner-Man features a super hero who teaches children to share, be polite and make friends. He shows up to helps resolve conflicts, lays out “polite rules” for kids to follow and addresses bullying situations and ways to deal with them. The judges said: “The rhyming and repetitive nature of the text was entertaining – kids will love it!” and called it “A useful book for parents, teachers and kids.”
My Sometimes Pal, which was inspired by Hartenaus’ visit to the Belden School, an abandoned one-room schoolhouse built in 1859, teaches young readers about life in the late 1800s, while also addressing the topic of bullying. The judges said the book “…paints a picture for the reader of what life was like in the mid-1800s” and it offers “Good lessons about friendships, communication, family roles and standing up for yourself and your values.”
Cannon is a retired teacher and author of six children’s book. Hartenaus is a fifth grade teacher at Abraham Lincoln Elementary School in Glen Ellyn, IL.
Manner-Man is also fun to read aloud to students, asking them to repeat the phrase “I am strong and my flash is bright, and I will defend you and make things all right!”

This book is also somewhat unusual in that it is a story involving a father and son.
Another fun fact is that previous readers will find the character Elisabeth from The Magic Word in the illustrations, as well as some of her classmates. These children reoccur in following books, so there is a cast of familiar characters in each succeeding release. I am always careful to include children of all colors and nationalities in the illustrations, so that every child can find himself/herself in each book. My illustrator, Kalpart, is awesome!!! Summertime is a good time for kids to be reading fun books, especially if they help teach some valuable lessons at the same time! No, the magic word is not abracadabra. The magic word which works best is PLEASE!! Rude little Elisabeth learns that saying “Please” and “Thank You” work their magic when making friendships as well…
My daughter, a kindergarten teacher, loves this book. She informed me that after reading the book with her class, the children were taking great delight in using the phrase, “What is the magic word?” in their relationships with other students!

Elizabeth does not understand why she has no friends until she talks to her mom. Mom suggests Elizabeth learn to be more considerate of her classmates and teacher, and to learn to use the magic words “thank you” and “please.”
The Magic Word gently teaches children two important life skills: how to make friends and manners. Ms. Cannon writes in rhyme that is simply and easy to follow. Kids will love learning how to treat others kindly while reading this story. It is also a good read-aloud-story, perfect for pre-school and kindergarten classes. The illustrator has given the child characters wonderful expressions that are easy to understand. They are drawn in soft pastels. This short, 25-page book, delivers on every level. Written in one of the most difficult manners, poetry, the story is pleasant, the message clear and the illustrations fantastic.”

“Peter and the Whimper-Whineys” by Sherrill S. Cannon is the story of a boy bunny who only whined and complained all day, every day. Peter’s mom tries to talk to him to make him be nicer, but when he keeps complaining and whining, he got sent to his room. His mom had told him that if he didn’t stop his whining, then the “Whimper-Whineys” would come for him and take him away with them. Peter was lying in bed thinking about what his mom had said, and then he found himself outside on a path. It’s not a good idea to be outside by yourself, especially when it’s dark, but Peter found himself outside of his room and was looking at a strange-looking man. The man was a Whimper-Whiney and was there to take Peter! Peter found out what it’s like with the Whimper-Whineys and how it’s not much fun. I hope that this experience has changed Peter and will make him nicer all of the time.
My mom says that I whine sometimes, but I’m glad that there aren’t really Whimper Whineys around. If you believe that they are real, then this book might be a little scary, but I thought it wasn’t and was fun to read. There are still too many words on the pages for me to read by myself, but with my mom reading it to me, it goes by fast. I like the pictures in the book because they show what’s going on in the story; there are dark pictures when Peter is out at night, and brighter ones when he’s doing things during the day. I think kids of any age will like this book because kids of all ages whine and complain.
Note from Mom: This is an amazing book to read to your kids – on many levels. Through appropriate illustrations and easy-to-read rhyming text, this can be used for manners. Peter observes what it looks like to be rude, loud, and obnoxious, which helps him to be able to change his own ways. This can be a great reminder for kids when they start acting unappreciative or selfish – they will remember the Whimper-Whineys, and what “could” happen to them if they don’t shape up. This story can be used by parents, teachers, and counselors – anyone with interaction with kids and those trying to remedy bad behaviors. I would recommend this book to everyone!”
